TELEFOMIN MP and Minister for Works and Highways, Solan Mirisim, is prioritising the education sector in the district.
He said education remains his number one priority and he will continue to support elementary, primary, high school and secondary schools in the district.
Mirisim made the remark while committing K1 million towards the establishment of Maso Primary School in the Misinmin ward of Telefomin Local Level Government.
He said the district authority was making the funding available to start infrastructure development for the school
During the announcement, Mirisim also said tertiary students from the district attending various institutions in the country will receive K2000 each.
“Being from a remote and isolated district, we will continue to support human resource development,” he said.
“My focus is on education – starting from elementary all the way up to tertiary level.”
He said education is a universal basic right but schools needed to be closer and accessible to students.
“Schools must be in walking distance,” Mirisim said.
“They should not be far away as it is quite risky for young children and the distance could be tiring.
“I started my grades 1 and 2 while living here with my parents.
“We had to walk 2-3 kilometres to attend Telefomin Primary Sschool.
“This will now be a thing of the past with the establishment of this new school.”
He thanked the district and provincial education division for approving the establishment of the new school.
“The new school will provide opportunities for students from Nambo, Wara Ferk, Siktaman, Ofektamin and nearby communities along the Sepik River,” Mirisim said.
“I will continue to provide funding support to ensure that this school has the necessary infrastructure.
“I urge the surrounding communities to work together with the school administration and support the project.”
“We need to work as a team for our children to be better educated.
“Look after the school facilities, assist the teachers and school.”
The MP presented K50,000 to the school administration for a new classroom, K50,000 to the women’s SME group and another additional K20,000 for the program.
He said Telefomin will see many changes, with the Tabubil-Telefomin road nearing its completion.
