Derby finds motivation in homecoming

THE international winger for the PNG Kumuls and the North Queensland Cowboys, Robert Derby, shared his newfound perspective and motivation after representing PNG and returning home.

Derby expressed that the overwhelming support from fans in Port Moresby, treating players like superstars, has become a driving force for him this season.

“In Port Moresby, they treat you like superstars, and I’m just using that as motivation, knowing who you play for, the people, and all those little kids. Being able to go back each time and see the impact you have on them is amazing,” Derby shared.

Derby, along with teammate Zack Laybutt, joined the Cowboys’ pre-season training camp after representing PNG in the Pacific Championship against Fiji in Port Moresby. Despite the late start, Derby emphasized their commitment to putting in extra work during the festive season to catch up with the rest of the team.

“Laybutt and I got extra time off after being away representing PNG, and now I’m looking at getting back on my feet,” Derby mentioned.

Reflecting on the previous season’s missed opportunity in the NRL finals, Derby highlighted the team’s determination to put in extra effort and secure a spot in the finals this season.

“This season will be tough, and the boys would want to put in extra effort to make the finals,” Derby asserted, expressing his ambition to secure the number two or five jersey in round one.
