SOCIAL Media pundits and keyboard warriors have been warned that they are being monitored and will be dealt with if found to be in breached of the cybercrime Act.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police NCD/Central Command Peter Guinness issued the warning as parliament convenes today for the first sitting of 2024 parliament.
“We have long term strategy for police to control cybercrime, already we have a section in place and have arrested and charged people.
“With the uncertainty that lies ahead and the looming Vote of No Confidence (VoNC), people must take responsibility when putting information out on social media,” ACP Guinness said.
He also raised concerned that there is a need for a strong control over social media comparing to China strong policy on the use of social media.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika said police will be in full control of the city as well as monitoring social websites.
“The rule of law will not become complacent, we will make sure that there is peace in terms of making sure normalcy maintains in the city.
“I want to appeal to those people who are using social media not to speculate misleading and misinterpreted information on social media.”
In a recent media conference Police Commissioner David Manning also raise security concern in relation to the lack of control on the use of social media.
“Mostly faceless people continue to misuse social media to destabilise the security of this country and it is a security concern.
“As to where the VoNC goes ahead and the result is not our concern, our concern is people willing to jeopardise lives and the livelihood of our people especially our residents.
“We have taken measures to ensure that appropriate security coverage is given at this time of political development,” Manning said.
