IN the heart of Rabaul Town, a community leader and longtime resident, Dickson Kondaul, has become a voice for the preservation of a significant piece of Papua New Guinea’s history – the monument dedicated to the late Founding Father, Sir Michael T. Somare.
Kondaul recently drew attention to the alarming neglect that has befallen the monument during a heartfelt expression of dismay.
“Remarkably, bushes have surrounded the monument,” noted Kondaul, emphasizing the need for urgent attention to maintain the historical landmark.
Taking matters into his own hands, Kondaul, accompanied by his family, visited the site to not only lay wreaths but also to physically engage in a cleanup effort.
This act of dedication and respect took place during the observance of the third Death Anniversary on February 26, 2024, as the family prepared for a solemn minute of silence and wreath-laying ceremony.
The monument, considered the “Birthplace of our founding father, the Great Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare at Rapindik, near Matupit Island in Rabaul District,” now stands as a symbol of both pride and disappointment.
Kondaul, expressing his disappointment at its current state, urged the relevant authorities, including the Ward Development Committee (WDC) and Land Owners, to take immediate responsibility for its maintenance.
In a passionate plea for action, Kondaul called for a financial commitment from the Rabaul Urban Authority, facilitated through Rabaul District or the ENB Tourism Authority.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that this historical site, a testament to Sir Michael T. Somare’s enduring legacy, receives the care and attention it deserves.
