High Commission of India celebrates Gandhi’s 154th birth anniversary

THE High Commission of India in Papua New Guinea celebrated the 154th birth Anniversary of their father of Nation, commonly known as the “Bapu”; the late Mahatma Gandhi.

The ceremony was held this morning at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) campus, where late Gandhi’s monument was established some years back.

Dignitaries along with other officers of India office in PNG all convened with the UPNG Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ceciliea Nembou to honor the day.

Indian Acting High Commissioner, Ravindra Nath, who reflected on the life of late Gandhi, expressed that Gandhi was a great leader.

He said through Gandhi strong leadership brought forward independence to the people of India.

“Today we have gathered here to honor the extraordinary life of Mahatma Gandhi, a name synonymous with peace and non-violence,” Mr. Nath said.

“Every year on October 2nd, Mahatma Ghandi’s birthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti to honor his efforts for the Independence of India.”

Speaking on the legacies of the great father and leader, Commissioner Nath expounded on the late Gandhi’s journey toward acquiring legal knowledge in London, which led him to forming the Satyagrah known as the civil disobedience.

Mr. Nath added that that was the cornerstone of Mr. Gandhi’s activism movement.

“Although his life was tragically cut short on January 30, 1948, his spirit continues to inspire global movements for civil rights,” he expressed.

Mr. Nath described late Gandhi’s character as leader who was always persistent and adamant of bringing change to the society and keeps on advocating for what he believes in by holding close to his heart the principles of self-discipline, humility, and compassion.

“As we reflect on his legacy, let us embrace his teachings of peace and Justice, and striving for unity in our undivided world,” Mr. Nath said.
