Buckingham Palace welcomes historic appointment of the first King’s Counsels in PNG

KING Charles’ congratulatory message was conveyed to the Head of State Governor General Sir Bob Dadae by the Assistant Private Secretary to the King, Dr Nathan Ross.

In his correspondence, Dr Ross said: “Tenkyu tru for informing us of the approval of King’s Counsel nominations.

“Appointments of the KC title in other Realms are made by the Governors General on appropriate advice from Realm authorities.”

Dr Ross was referring to the process involved in the appointment of the six King’s Counsels, a process that has been the tradition since the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1.

Morobe Govenor Hon. Luther Wenge KC MP, welcomed the message from the Palace.

“Those individuals who have been throwing tantrums and making baseless criticisms, this statement from the Palace on behalf of His Majesty King Charles puts beyond doubt that the appointment of PNGs first KCs have been made correctly and in the same way as in all other Realms of the Commonwealth of nations,” Governor Wenge said.

“This should silence the critics who have claimed irregularity in the appointments, as well as any suggestion that the appointments would not be recognized as legitimate.”

Governor Wenge said Attorney General Hon. Pila Niningi and Prime Minister Hon. James Marape should be congratulated for this historic development to the legal profession in the country, on the eve of its 50th independence anniversary.

Those appointed King’s Counsel by the Governor General on November 28, 2024 include Mr Rimbink Pato, Mr Levente Jurth, Mr Ian Molloy, Mr Loani Henao, Mr Mathew Tamutai, and Governor Wenge.

Governor Wenge added that the GGs appointments are endorsed by Buckingham Palace, and those criticizing should assess their positions under existing English law and & equity traditions and rules.

The Attorney General and Prime Minister have upheld an important English tradition received by all realm nations and authorities of the Commonwealth of Nations, and critics should apologize to them.
