Cricket PNG Reaffirms Commitment to Player Welfare

CRICKET Papua New Guinea (CPNG) acknowledges the concerns raised in the recent Post-Courier article on 06 February 2025, regarding player welfare, specifically relating to PNG Garamuts skipper, Gaba Frank.

“We deeply value the dedication and sacrifices made by all our players, who proudly
represent PNG on and off the field”.

While Gaba Frank is not under a current central contract, CEO of Cricket PNG, Richard Done said, “Cricket PNG engaged with the leadership of Western Suburbs Cricket Club through September and October last year to ensure that Gaba had their full support during his time in Sydney. This included housing with other overseas players at the Club, and a job on top of his cricket commitments.”

“Our U19 Coach at the time, Jack Vare, had also liaised with the PNG community in Sydney and the Club to make sure Gaba was well looked after. Cricket PNG worked through the Australian High Commission and the Australian sponsor, Cricket Australia, so that Gaba had the required documentation for his required Class 408 visa to be able to work part-time to pay for his personal expenses. This was the arrangement put in place.”

“In light of this, Cricket PNG was surprised to read yesterday that Gaba was struggling under this arrangement. We’d encourage Gaba himself, or others who have been aware, to reach out rather than remaining in the background, so we can provide what’s required to ensure his welfare,” Done added.

Cricket PNG is starting this year fresh therefore we are committed to the well-being of our athletes and recognize the challenges faced by players pursuing opportunities both domestically and internationally.

As previously explained, we are currently reviewing our player support structures to identify areas where improvements can be made, particularly in relation to contracted and non-contracted players competing abroad. Our goal is to establish sustainable welfare programs that provide comprehensive support, including financial assistance and player development opportunities.

Cricket PNG’s leadership, in collaboration with the Board, is taking proactive steps to address these matters, including:

 Reviewing current player welfare policies to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our
athletes.

 Improve communication channels between management, coaching staff, and players to
address concerns promptly.

 Exploring partnerships with government agencies and corporate sponsors to strengthen
player support systems

We commend Gaba Frank for his dedication to representing PNG with pride. His passion is a
reflection of the spirit that drives our national teams especially in international competitions. Cricket PNG remains committed to creating an environment where every player feels supported, valued, and empowered to achieve their best, this year and going forward.

We thank the public and our cricket community for their continued support as we work towards positive and lasting solutions
