RABAUL International School is buzzing with ambition. From robust academic achievements to bold expansion plans, the institution is charting a course for a brighter future, as revealed at its recent Annual General Meeting.
The school’s commitment to providing a top-tier education was stressed by the principal’s report, which celebrated the remarkable success of the Grade 8 students.

Achieving a perfect 100% merit selection rate, with an impressive average score of 80%, these students have set a new benchmark.
Notably, the “Seven Steps to Writing” program has proven its effectiveness, with students demonstrating exceptional writing expertise, a reflection to the school’s dedication to developing lifelong learners.
“Our students’ achievements are a selling point,” declared Mr Mapi Morea, reflecting the school’s pride in its academic thoroughness.
The Parents and Citizens have every reason to celebrate the dedication of its students, teachers, and leadership.
Beyond academic triumphs, the school is embarking on a comprehensive modernization and expansion drive.
The outgoing Chairman Mr. Nick Lyons detailed the successful acquisition of IEA funding, which will facilitate critical renovations and infrastructure improvements. This includes addressing urgent maintenance needs and upgrading outdated fixtures, ensuring a conducive learning environment.
The preschool facilities are also in line for a significant upgrade, with plans to expand and modernize classrooms. This initiative aims to strengthen enrolment and provide a stronger foundation for younger learners.
Recognizing the challenges of local transportation, the board is also pursuing the acquisition of a new school bus, in addition to a 25-seater purchased last year (2024), prioritizing student safety and reliability.
A pivotal development is the election of one of the School Board members, Mr. Ian Sahoto to the IEA’s board of directors. This strategic move grants the school a direct voice in the regional education policy, allowing it to advocate for its students’ needs at the highest levels.
Looking ahead, the school is preparing for a comprehensive IEA review, which will assess various aspects of its operations. This evaluation is expected to identify areas for further improvement and secure additional support from the education agency.
Sunday Bulletin was present and observed perhaps the most ambitious proposal discussed at the AGM as the potential expansion to offer Grades 9 and 10. Dr Cherie Litwiller from the IEA acknowledged the strong parental interest in this initiative, but emphasized the need for careful consideration of enrollment numbers and financial viability.
The school currently has 124 students, a figure deemed “awfully light” for sustaining higher grade offerings. To make this expansion feasible, the school would need to reach 160-165 students, ensuring sufficient revenue to cover the costs of specialized teachers and facilities.
The new school board, strengthened by the election of three new board members (unopposed) during the AGM will be exploring the feasibility of this expansion through an enhanced marketing strategy showcasing Rabaul International School with its teaching and learning facilities to increase enrolment numbers to one day achieve vision.
These new members will bring to an already diverse and expert board, fresh perspectives on current and new challenges ensuring the school’s continued growth and development.
Rabaul International School is clearly on an upward path. With a focus on academic excellence, strategic upgrades, and ambitious expansion plans, the institution is poised to become a lighthouse of educational excellence in the province and the region.
The school’s commitment to providing the “best possible learning environment and opportunities” is evident in every aspect of its operations, promising a bright future for its students and the community.
