BUSINESS communities in Rabaul have convened to address escalating law and order issues, citing significant economic repercussions and demanding immediate action from local authorities.
The meeting, hosted by Rabaul Hotel owner Susan McGrade last week, presented a critical link between security and economic stability in Rabaul District.
The primary concern raised by business owners was the detrimental impact of rising crime on workforce retention and operational efficiency.
Tom Tong, representing the Hongland Group of Companies and the Chinese Community in Rabaul, stressed the challenge of maintaining a stable workforce amongst this growing security fears, despite businesses investing in private security measures.
“The instability directly affects our ability to operate efficiently,” stated Tong, pointing out the economic strain placed on businesses.
The meeting revealed that the business community, which employs an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 individuals, is a vital economic driver for Rabaul where this current security climate threatens this economic foundation.
Acting Rabaul District Administrator Freddy Lemeki acknowledged the economic implications of the security crisis, outlining planned interventions focused on strengthening police presence and addressing contributing factors to crime.
He said; a Police Reservist training program, scheduled for April, is aimed to increase manpower and improve security patrols.
“Our goal is to create a secure environment that supports economic activity,” Lemeki stated, emphasizing the need for a stable business climate.
Additionally, plans for an eviction exercise targeting illegal settlements were announced, with the aim of reducing crime-related pressures on the business sector.
The meeting pointed out the need for a collaborative approach to address the economic impact of security concerns.
Attendees, including East New Britain Provincial Member Micheal Marum, Town Mayor Changol Manuai, and ENB Senior Provincial Magistrate Samuel Lavutul, discussed strategies to minimize economic disruption and restore investor confidence.
The business communities are calling for swift and decisive action to restore law and order, ensuring the continued economic viability of Rabaul Town.
