Celebrating women`s leadership in PNG`s health sector

RECENTLY, officials from the National Department of Health (NDoH), Department of Personnel Management (DPM) and provincial governments were joined by representatives from the Australian High Commission to discuss women’s leadership in PNG’s health sector.

The workshop was attended by Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) leaders and experts from Provincial Health Authorities (PHAs) in East New Britain, Morobe, West Sepik, Western, Western Highlands and Bougainville Department of Health. The event celebrated the achievements of the Sapotim Lida program as it came to a close.

Speakers and working groups emphasised the values of integrating GEDSI policies and practices in PNG’s health sector and reflected on case studies collected by Sapotim Lida that featured women leaders and their journeys, as well as the impact they have had on their respective fields and communities. The value of embedding GEDSI policies into health service delivery was shared and analysed through several examples.

From the grassroots up to senior level, Sapotim Lida has provided leadership training and guidance on workplace reform, and worked with PHAs to embed GESI principles into provincial health systems, ensuring women’s voices shaped policies and enabled them to become active participants in the health system.

The constructive discussions through the three-day workshop have positively influenced PNG policymakers and the Australian Government to consider existing challenges and opportunities for women leadership in the health sector.

Following International Women’s Day on 8 March, PNG and Australia are pleased to commemorate the achievements of Sapotim Lida, and to celebrate the dedication and commitment of its staff and partners across PNG.

A longstanding supporter of health in PNG, Australia remains committed to supporting GEDSI policies and encouraging improved health outcomes for the people of Papua New Guinea.
