PRIME Minister James Marape has described the recently launched Hiritano Highway redevelopment project as a strategic national economic catalyst for Papua New Guinea.

He said the road links Port Moresby with key growth areas that host major energy, agriculture, and resource projects, including Papua LNG, Pasca A, Wildebeest LNG, and future expansions in fisheries and tourism.

“The Hiritano Highway will carry not just vehicles, but our hopes for economic prosperity,” said PM Marape during the ground breaking ceremony of this project on Friday at Bereina Station.

“Every kina we invest here must return four kina to the national economy—and more,” he added.

The Prime Minister committed K5 million to the Kairuku District to support land mobilisation, mapping, and economic development, in addition to the K62–K63 million outlined in the district’s five-year plan.

He encouraged the people of Central and Gulf to register and develop their customary land for productive use in agriculture, livestock, and tourism rather than waiting for government handouts.

“Do not reduce your land to just betelnut. Your land can feed cities and supply exports. If you work your land, you will be among the richest people on Earth,” PM urged.

PM Marape used the occasion to reflect on broader national challenges and aspirations, calling on all Papua New Guineans to become producers rather than passive recipients of government support.

“Australia and America were built on land ownership and productivity. Here in PNG, we have land, but many are sitting idle. That must change,” he said.

PM stressed that economic independence must follow political independence, and that the current generation of leaders, especially under Pangu’s leadership, must drive the shift from aid-dependency to self-reliance.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s focus on rural infrastructure, agricultural productivity, and inclusive growth, noting that future leaders must never forget rural communities or neglect any part of the country. “The Hiritano Highway is not just a road; it is a pathway to dignity and opportunity for our people. Let this road be a symbol of economic revolution in this beautiful part of Papua New Guinea,” said PM Marape.
