The PNG U19 Garamuts continued to show fighting spirit in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier in Sano, Japan, despite defeats against Fiji on April 26 and Japan on April 27.

In Saturday’s match against Fiji, the Garamuts came out with high energy in the field, applying strong pressure through disciplined ground fielding and safe hands to restrict Fiji to 185 runs. The bowling unit, led by early breakthroughs, created opportunities throughout the innings.

Following a bright opening partnership of 41 between Dauncey Tom and Dai Mahuru, the batting line-up couldn’t build other lasting partnerships, and the Garamuts were all out for 91, resulting in a 94-run defeat despite some encouraging starts by four of the batters.

In their second match against host nation Japan, played on Sunday 27 April, the Garamuts again impressed with their early fielding and bowling effort. Vagi Vani was outstanding, taking 3 for 27 with tight, attacking bowling. Japan was reduced to 110 for 6 and then 131 for 7 however they recovered through their lower order to post a competitive total of 179 runs.

Despite not taking a wicket in the final 10 overs, the Garamuts did well to limit Japan to only 48 runs in that period.

Chasing a competitive total, PNG’s top order was unable to build momentum under consistent Japanese bowling. However, Aleund Boge showed tremendous composure, facing 68 deliveries and absorbing pressure with a calm and determined approach at the crease. His innings provided a clear example of the batting discipline the team is aiming to replicate more consistently.

Garamuts Coach, Kila Pala, praised the team’s attitude while highlighting areas for continued growth, “Our fielding and early bowling have been real strengths so far, and the boys are showing great pride and energy in how they represent PNG.”

“We know we need to bowl with the same discipline through the final stages of an innings, and with the bat, it’s about facing more balls, occupying the crease, and building Amini Park Turua Avenue partnerships. Aleund’s innings yesterday showed exactly the patience and discipline we are looking for.”

“I would like to thank the supporters, cricket fans, the families, friends, and sponsors for their support and believe in the team, the Under 19 Garamuts. We will do our very best in the last remaining games,” he added. The Garamuts will regroup ahead of their final tournament match against Fiji on April 29. The group remains determined to apply the lessons learned and finish the tournament with a performance to be proud of.
