Touch Federation of Papua New Guinea (TFPNG) has successfully hosted a two-day referee clinic in Oro Province.

Facilitated by Popondetta Touch Association in partnership with TFPNG, the workshop focused on conducting referee education and certification to support touch footy in the province. Conducting the workshop was TFPNG’s Referee Director Michael Imo and Technical Director Buddy Mitau.

Sessions of the workshop include;

Day 1: Introductory Level Referees Course (Basic rules and principles of Touch Football, field positioning, signaling and whistle techniques, practical drills and on-field simulated match officiating)

Day 2: Level 1 Referee Course (Advanced officiating techniques and game management, Communication and decision-making under pressure, Team refereeing and mechanics, Assessment through practical evaluations and scenario-based learning)

The workshop brought together 33 participants (eight females, 25 males) who represented the various touch clubs and communities in the province.

Recommendations being made brought about after the workshop include ongoing mentorship, further training and appointment of a local referee coordinate for Popondetta touch association who will monitor the progress of referees in the province.

According to the TFPNG Technical Director Buddy Matau, the workshop was a success.

“The strong turnout and level of engagement confirm that Oro Province is ready to grow its referee base and further strengthen its presence in the National Touch Football landscape.”

“We look forward to continued support and collaboration in developing grassroots officiating programs across all regions,” said Mitau.
