The mayhem and destruction caused by PMV (Public Motor Vehicle) drivers and their relatives in Port Moresby yesterday is utterly unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms, says NCD Governor Powes Parkop.

“There is no place for such lawlessness in our capital city, especially in this day and age when we are striving to build a modern, peaceful, and progressive society,” he said.

“While I share the public’s grief and outrage over the tragic killing of a PMV crew member – a crime that must be thoroughly investigated and justice delivered – it does not in any way justify the reckless and tribal violence that followed.

“The actions of the individuals involved in the riot have not only undermined law and order, but have also tarnished the image of our city and the tireless efforts we’ve made to promote Port Moresby as a safe, attractive, and investment-friendly destination.

“I have appealed to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Metropolitan Superintendent to immediately identify and arrest all PMV drivers and individuals involved in the riots, and have them charged for riotous behaviour and other relevant offences.

“I have also called on the Road Traffic Authority (RTA) to suspend the operating licences of all PMVs involved – indefinitely.

“Furthermore, I call for a review of the RTA’s role in managing public transport in Port Moresby. The authority has failed to effectively regulate the sector.

“Responsibility must now be transferred to the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), where we are ready to ensure a safer, more reliable, and professional public transport system for our people.

“What occurred yesterday was a complete breakdown of decency and order. It must never happen again. We must act – swiftly and decisively – to restore confidence in public safety and to uphold the rule of law in our capital city.”
