TRUKAI Industries Ltd wants more universities to join its Trukai Smart Farmer Program as partners in training local farmers on commercial rice production.

PNG’s largest rice company has been collaborating with the PNG University of Technology (Unitech) and Pacific Adventist University (PAU) since signing memorandums of understanding in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

The Trukai-Unitech partnership has catered for farmers from the Highlands and Momase regions while farmers from the Southern and Islands regions have benefited from the Trukai-PAU partnership.

Trukai Industries’ agriculture manager Anna David said: “Everyone has been talking about rice production in PNG but it will not come about if only one person is doing it, and that calls for partners to come in to support this program.

“This program is not only for Trukai, this is for the nation and partners who are interested to join this program, come and we all join our hands and move forward in achieving the increase in local rice production.”
