AN elderly victim of sorcery accusation related violence (SARV) has urged Gulf police to investigate an incident at Kaivukavi village in Ihu, Kikori District.
A 63-year-old man, now has permanent scars on his body and a disabled arm, is calling on police to assist in investigating a sorcery-related incident that occurred in February in Kaivukavu village in Ihu LLG of Kikori district in Gulf.
The 63-year-old man (named) with permanent scars and a disabled arm visited the PNG Tribal Foundation office today to seek police assistance following the death of a young woman in Kaivukavu in February.
He said the woman suffered from an illness and was taken to Kapuna hospital but died on arrival. The villagers blamed him for using sorcery to kill the woman.
The man said about 12 young men, including a 15-year-old boy, had attacked and tried to kill him.
Medical reports obtained from the Port Moresby General Hospital show that the elderly man has sensation loss of the right arm, neck injuries, biceps, and nose from the knife attack.
His wife was allegedly beaten and their house destroyed along with water containers to store fresh water.
The man said his family remained traumatised over the incident and need police assistance and investigation.
“I am at peace now but all I want is law or take its cause and we don’t want these perpetrators to stay in the village and will cause any trouble again to the innocent villagers whenever there is an incident,” he said.
“We want police to get into the village and arrest these suspects, we have Glassman Bill 2022 passed in Parliament and let the justice system to take its cause telling others that there is law for sorcery.”
PNG Tribal Foundation advised the man that such incidents should be reported to police with a formal complaint laid. The foundation would support the victims by assisting police with the investigation and prosecution process.
Tribal Foundation assured the man that they would work closely with him and his family on the case.
