Madang Provincial Police Commander Robert Baim has condemned false media reports that a helicopter transporting ballot boxes was hijacked during the Usino-Bundi By-election.

He said the reports circulating in some media outlets were not only misleading but also detrimental to Papua New Guinea’s image on the global stage.

“Such unconfirmed reports must cease immediately. Journalists and media outlets have a responsibility to verify information before publishing. False reports undermine our nation’s integrity and credibility,” Acting Superintendent Baim said.

“Reporters must be accountable. Our country’s image depends on truthful and responsible journalism.”

He clarified that there was no hijacking of the helicopter. According to police reports, the helicopter carrying election officials landed safely before an incident unfolded involving armed men.

“The helicopter landed at Kembeni in Ward 19, approximately five kilometres from the intended drop-off point in Yaiyo village, Ward 20. The reasons for this landing are still under investigation.

“Shortly after landing, a group of armed men, believed to be supporters of a candidate, intercepted the polling team. They forced the presiding officer Nathan Tawi to sign ballot papers. One official managed to escape and contacted police in Kabiufa, Eastern Highlands,” Acting Supt Baim said.

He said Mobile Squad 13 and Special Response Unit’s Quick Reaction Force (QRF) mobilised and rescued the remaining polling officials but one auxiliary police officer and several ballot materials were still unaccounted for.

“Nine suspects have been apprehended and are currently in custody here in Madang, undergoing processing by our Investigative Taskforce,” he said.

“We are committed to maintaining law and order and will pursue anyone attempting to disrupt the electoral process.”

Acting Supt Baim commended the efforts of Chief Inspector Henry Ereman, Group Commander of the Northern Mobile Group, and the QRF team for their swift action.

“I call on all candidates and supporters to uphold the integrity of this election. Respect the process, maintain peace, and keep your supporters calm. Our police force is prepared to respond at any moment.”

Police investigations are continuing and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that will assist in locating the missing officer and election materials.
