Prime Minister Marape has given instructions for the Road Traffic Authority to return its vehicle registrations function to the Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited.
Mr Marape said he had made the decision amid concerns about the functions and operations of the two State-owned enterprises.
He was responding to Oro Governor Gary Juffa who questioned the Prime Minister during Question Time in Parliament today about the recent transfer of the vehicle registration and related functions from the MVIL to RTA.
Mr Juffa said the transfer of these functions had caused much inconvenience and frustrations among the motor vehicle owners throughout the country.
PM Marape said he was aware of the growing concerns among the public as well as in government circles, including his Pangu caucus.
“I’m absolutely aware of the public sentiments, including from our own cuscuses, on the inconvenience that have been caused on the latest threat on the functions being moved back to RTA.
“I have given instructions that the functions, especially vehicle registrations, be returned to MVIL.”
He added that in today’s technologically advanced environment, collaboration between RTA and MVIL must be improved to enhance efficiency and ensure safer roads.
“I think in this day and age of technology, a working relationship between MVIL and RTA would uplift the standards of vehicle inspection- especially at the point of inspection and at the point of registry, in respect to safety and road worthy advice,” Mr Marape said.
