THE Australian Government responded swiftly with a contribution of K13.5 million to support Papua New Guinea’s fight against polio.

Australian High Commission official Miriam Carter said health workers would be travelling to all parts of PNG to ensure children were vaccinated against the dreaded disease.

“We believe that every child deserves the best start in life,” Ms Carter said.

“We know that vaccinations play a central role in protecting against serious diseases such as polio as well as measles, whooping cough, and others.

“That’s why we are proud to support ongoing efforts to boost vaccination rates across the country, especially for children in the most hard-to-reach areas.”

“Working closely with the National Department of Health, Provincial Health Authorities, and technical and development partners, our support will help protect an estimated three million children and reduce the risk of future polio outbreaks.”
