The Archdiocese of Madang has taken a significant step in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and sorcery accusation-related violence (SARV), hosting a week-long workshop aimed at empowering local communities.

Held at the Migiar Pastoral Centre, the event brought together about 50 representatives from Catholic parishes, members of the Foursquare Church, Village Court magistrates and the Community Policing Unit.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Archdiocese, its development arm Diocesan Caritas, and the Grassroots Community Advocacy (GCA) Sumkar Team, which provided a forum for participants to share personal experiences and discuss strategies for preventing violence. Attendees from the districts of Madang, Bogia, Sumkar, and Usino Bundi engaged in dynamic discussions, focusing on how to de-escalate conflicts before they turn violent.

A key theme of the workshop was the integration of faith-based principles into conflict resolution. Participants were encouraged to prioritize spiritual values over emotional responses during family disputes, fostering a collective dedication to ensuring respect and safety for everyone in the community.

The sessions were facilitated by the GCA with support from the Centre of Hope Safe House and the Melanesian Institute. The workshop equipped attendees with practical knowledge and tools to take back to their communities and implement change. Organizers recognized Fe Eugene Grengary, Sr Techla and Leo Yat for their leadership. The collaborative effort highlights a unified commitment to combating violence and promoting a culture of respect and safety throughout Madang Province.
