Parliament today hosted United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in what has been described as a historic occasion for Papua New Guinea.

Acting Speaker of Parliament Koni Iguan welcomed Mr Guterres on behalf of MPs and the people of Papua New Guinea, saying it was a rare honor for the Secretary-General to address the chamber.

“This is a special day for our Parliament and for the strong relationship between Papua New Guinea and the United Nations,” Mr. Iguan said. “Your presence reaffirms the values of peace, dignity, equality and respect for all, values which are also central to our democracy.”

Mr Iguan highlighted the country’s vibrant democratic traditions since independence in 1975, while also acknowledging challenges such as political instability, corruption, and service delivery in remote areas.

He expressed hope that Mr Guterres’ visit would strengthen ties between Papua New Guinea and the UN and inspire national leaders in their work.

The Secretary-General is in Port Moresby as part of his Pacific tour, where he is expected to address key issues including climate change, development and peace.
