Air Niugini’s Airbus A220 has departed Canada on its maiden flight Papua New Guinea and is expected to arrive on Monday, 15 September, State Enterprises Minister William Duma announced today.
He said the initial comprehensive training program for pilots, crew and staff had been completed, with additional training to follow for more crew and staff.
“The Air Niugini Airbus A220 is in the air and on its way to serve the people of Papua New Guinea,” Minister Duma said.
“This is a tremendous milestone for the National flag carrier as we leave the past behind and, alongside 50th Independence celebrations, we move the airline into the future.
“The first A220, that has been christened with the name Independence, and is expected to touch down at Jackson’s International Airport on Monday.”
Mr Duma commended Prime Minister James Marape for his strong leadership and support, and the Marape-Rosso Government for its continued support to the Air Niugini re-fleeting program.
“The re-fleeting program is happening because the Prime Minister and National Government got behind the vision of Air Niugini and Kumul Consolidated Holdings.
“We also appreciate the work of the Treasurer, the Honourable Ian Ling Stuckey, for his commitment in facilitating and locking in predelivery payments for the new aircraft.”
Mr Duma added that the modernization challenges faced by Air Niugini were common to many state-owned enterprises as infrastructure was due for upgrade and replacement.
“After 50 years of service, a common challenge encountered across our SOEs are aging assets, infrastructure, while we are serving a rapidly growing population,” he said.
“This places strain on current infrastructure but this Government is committed to reshaping and repositioning our SOEs to serve our people for the next 50 years and beyond.
“This requires significant investment, and work has commenced to turnaround our SOEs through a ‘stabilize, invest and grow’ strategy.
“We are also looking towards new investment modalities to transform our SOEs and improve service delivery to our people.
“Our State enterprises are recovering from previous decades of neglect, and our people will continue to benefit.”
A total of 11 Airbus A220 aircraft will be introduced as part of Air Niugini’s re-fleeting program. This includes 3 of the Airbus A220-300s and 8 of the A220-100s. The Airbus A220-300 aircraft has a total seating capacity of 138, which includes 8 Business Class seats and 130 Economy Class seats.

Can we as a stop focusing on the negative and look at good things that are happening? Everyone is pointing a finger and focusing on corruption. Because we focus on corruption, it expands and extends. Please I am begging png citizens to stand back and make room for God’s will to be done. Let God fight the battle for peace and unity. This is a young nation in it’s early stage of maturity. God is fully aware of that. God is allowing such wickedness to sprout but only for a certain time frame, in the end, everything will be aligned to serve his greater purpose. There is a God of order and he will balance things out in the end. No one is bigger or better or more powerful than God. There is always a time and season for everything. There is always an end to every beginning. God’ s timing is perfect. His thoughts and ways are higher than any human. His plans are unpredictable. God doesn’t need us to fight his battle. He only needs us to affirm his promises and believe in his strength to provide. To stand back and surrender everything to him. We can only petition cases to his divine throne of grace. He is the God of justice who knows how to justify every situation. I am not for or against the government but to bring an understanding to fellow Papua New Guineans. Stop listing the wickedness and start counting the blessings. Goodness will be born out of wickedness. Don’t look at what the creatures are doing. But call upon the creator to fix his creatures. MAY GOD’S WILL BE DONE. TO GOD BE THE GLORY.
