Chief Secretary to Government, Ivan Pomaleu, has described the late Governor of Morobe, Luther Asikawa Wenge, as a man of humility, resilience, courage, and quiet determination-qualities that defined his leadership and legacy in Papua New Guinea’s political and public service landscape.
In a heartfelt tribute on behalf of the Department of Prime Minister and National Executive Council, Mr Pomaleu extended condolences to Governor Wenge’s family, relatives, colleagues, and the people of Morobe Province, following his passing on September 13, 2025, at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Mr Pomaleu said Governor Wenge served three consecutive terms in Parliament from 1997 to 2012 and was later re-elected in 2022. In these roles, he brought not only his deep institutional knowledge but also a rare commitment to service that was rooted in character rather than position.
“Governor Wenge was not a man of many words, but his actions spoke volumes,” he said.
“His colleagues and contemporaries alike have described him as a man of great zeal, courage, and professional integrity. He carried out his duties with diligence and humility, often going beyond the call of duty to ensure government services reached his people.
“As Chair of the Bipartisan Committee overseeing reforms in provincial administrations, Wenge played a crucial role in strengthening the delivery of government services across provinces.”
Mr Pomaleu added that the late governor’s impact was less about the offices he held and more about the example he set.
“In him, we saw the true character of a Member of Parliament — one who did not seek recognition or praise but worked tirelessly for the betterment of others,” Mr Pomaleu said. “His service reminds us that leadership is not about position or title, but about character, dedication, and the quiet pursuit of excellence.”
Mr Pomaleu described Wenge as deeply respected, admired, and valued by fellow MPs, departmental heads, and public servants. His legacy, he said, will continue to inspire the nation, especially those within the public service who had the privilege of working alongside him.
As Papua New Guinea mourns the passing of the veteran leader, Pomaleu urged that his memory be celebrated not just for the offices he held, but for the humility, integrity, and selflessness with which he served.
“May the late Governor Wenge rest peacefully in eternal life,” he concluded, invoking Psalm 23:4 as a message of comfort to the family and the people of Morobe.
