His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, raised a glass tonight to toast Papua New Guinea’s 50years of sovereignty and nationhood.
Prince Edward assured Papua New Guineans of the Royal Family’s and Great Britain’s continued support. He is King Charles’ youngest brother and is representing the monarch during the Golden Jubilee celebrations this week.
“I’m reminded that when my mother (late Queen Elizabeth) came here in 1974, she made a promise to you to assure you of continuing friendship and assistance,” HRH said.
“I very much hope that we’ve been able to prove that over these last 50 years. So, I’m delighted to be able to ask you all, please, to rise and to join me in drinking a toast to the people and prosperity of Papua New Guinea.”
Prince Edward was joined by Prime Minister James Marape in toasting PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
