THE National Department of Health, Morobe Provincial Health Authority and Frontières have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a three-year cancer initiative project.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Morobe Cancer Initiative Project, Morobe PHA, and MSF to enhance cancer services, particularly palliative care, at Angau Memorial Hospital.

Morobe PHA Chief Executive Officer Dr Kipas Binga, explained that cancer is a spectrum of cases and not just a treatment.

“The approach to cancer care at Angau differs from other PHAs, focusing less on screening and early testing.

“We are different because the National Cancer Centre for treatment was based in our facility.

“As a PHA and an organisation responsible for public health, our top priority is to re-establish the cancer redesign service,” Dr Binga said.

MSF Head of Mission and Medical Coordinator Robert Keango said: “MSF specifically supports the hospital in delivering care services, medical supplies, support of the human resources, and developing guidelines we use to improve palliative care aspects.”

Acting Health Secretary Ken Wai said: “We are here to support you because Morobe is a huge province and Angau is our centre for cancer.”
