Deputy Opposition Leader and North Fly MP James Donald has voiced concern regarding the Marape Government’s decision to defer the Local Level Government (LLG) elections to October.

He described this move as indicative of inadequate planning by the executive government.

“Unfortunately, this situation reflects a lack of consistent preparation. It appears that there has been little to no strategic planning in place. This government seems to struggle with decisiveness, which is concerning.

“I question the decision to schedule elections during the national examination period, a major event that is already accounted for in the calendar. It raises the question of why the elections were planned for a time that conflicts with national exams.

“Furthermore, it is both unexpected and regrettable that the Education Minister, who is well aware of the academic calendar, did not advise the cabinet appropriately on these dates.”

“This situation underscores a need for improved planning

and coordination within the government. The Opposition believes that this oversight has significant implications for our local level governments, and we strongly urge the government to consider the needs of the citizens who rely on effective representation at the local level.
