POLICE in Chimbu Province have arrested 18 grade ten male students from various High and Secondary Schools in the Simbu Province following reports of disorderly behavior after the completion of Grade 10 examinations.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Detective Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang, said the students were taken into custody in Kundiawa over the weekend and they are now facing charges related to alcohol and public disturbances.

PPC Rubiang said the students were arrested following his directives to grades eight, ten and twelve students not to misbehave and misconduct after their final examinations.

He said anyone found misbehaving or involved in liquor related offences after the national examinations would formally be arrested and charged and their court files prepared and proceed to the District Court.

He added that the students’ personal particulars would be obtained, including fingerprints and face photos and handed over to the Officer In charge of Crimes (OIC) and their court results would also be forwarded to the OIC Crimes. PPC Rubiang strictly police bail at K1000.

“My appeal to parents and families that my decision of police bail to K1000 is still stands and I will not change that on any formal request from parents and families.

“I have directed my officers to go through each and everyone of them by fingerprints and photograph and update their criminal records.

“All students must understand that in any further studies or employment you will be required police clearance, and such will stop your future opportunities,” PPC Rubiang said.

He also warned Grade 12 and Grade 8 students and their parents to keep out of such disorderly behavior. They had long educational journeys to go so they should not spoil it, he said.

The PPC urged all students, parents and community leaders to take responsibility and assist police by discouraging disorderly celebrations. He also reminded students that their exams mark an important step in their education journey so they should celebrate responsibly with respect for their families, communities and the law.

PPC Rubiang urged everyone to work together to ensure a safe, peaceful and successful examination period for their future leaders of Chimbu Province and PNG.
