The Unggai-Bena District continues its strong commitment to education and human resource development under the leadership of Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science, Technology and Sports, and Member for Unggai-Bena, Kinoka Feo.

Since 2023, the Unggai-Bena District Development Authority (UBDDA) has allocated K5 million annually to subsidize tuition fees for tertiary students across the country. In addition to supporting students studying locally, the district has expanded its education program to provide international study opportunities through the Unggai-Bena District Education Scholarship.

Eligibility for school fee assistance under this program requires the planting of a minimum of 500 coffee trees, effectively earning their education through sustainable agricultural participation.

This year, 16 students have been awarded scholarships to pursue higher education at China Three Gorges University. They represent the second group of students supported by the district for studies in China. The first group of 10 students departed in 2024, while an additional 10 students were sponsored last year to study at Parul University in India.

Before their departure on 23 October 2025, the students attended a farewell dinner hosted by Minister Feo on 22 October. In his remarks, Mr Feo congratulated the group and urged them to study diligently, uphold discipline, and be good ambassadors for their village, district and country.

He told the students that China believed in hard work, and only through hard work would success come. He assured the students that as long as he was a Member of Parliament, he would continue to invest in human resource development.

Chairman of the scholarship Dr Jethro Messimato reminded the students that the scholarship is a privilege, not an entitlement. “Students have the right to education, but it is the parents’ responsibility to pay school fees,” Dr Messimato said. When relatives or the UBDDA assist, it is a privilege. You must take ownership of your education and make the most of this opportunity.”

Dr Messimato also acknowledged the leadership of the UBDDA and the efforts of Dr Clement Waine, Bernita Korne, and others who helped facilitate the scholarship.

“When the UBDDA invests in human resource development by paying school fees, students must show commitment and perform well. Good academic results will encourage the DDA to continue and expand its support for future students,” he said.

The Unggai-Bena District remains committed to empowering its young people through education and developing a skilled and capable generation for the nation’s future.
