Commissioner of Police David Manning has confirmed that three youths were arrested, and several weapons seized after they attempted to hold up an unmarked police vehicle in Port Moresby.

“At around 3am on Sunday, 7 December, police patrolling in an unmarked car along Airvos Avenue came across youths who attempted to stage a holdup,” Commissioner Manning said.

“The suspects tried to escape but were apprehended by police, and a number of offensive weapons were found in their possession. This is an example of proactive, intelligence-led policing removing criminals from our streets and delivering real results.”

Weapons recovered included a homemade gun and ammunition, several wire-catapult slingshots fitted with arrows, and a knife.

CoP Manning commended the officers involved for their swift and professional response, which led to the arrest of the armed suspects and the removal of dangerous weapons from the community.

“Our Police Force will not tolerate the possession of such dangerous weapons by any person,” he said. “These young offenders will now answer for their actions before the courts.”

He added that both unmarked and high-visibility police patrols are operating across the nation as part of pre-Christmas operations.

“Residents of Port Moresby and other cities can rest assured that police are actively patrolling this festive season. Our priority is the safety of law-abiding citizens and ensuring the criminal element does not detract from what should be a joyous period.”

The three youths were detained at Badili Police Station, charged, and denied bail.
