The SP PNG Hunters have officially concluded Block 1 of their 2026 pre-season training program, marking an important foundation phase focused on discipline, leadership and professional standards across the playing group.
The completion of Block 1 reinforces the Club’s commitment to building a high performance culture both on and off the field, with strong emphasis placed on accountability, respect and preparation.
This year has become even more important as the Hunters have now had 13 players from last year’s squad move on from the club.
As part of the first phase, the Hunters welcomed former NRL Head Coach Matthew Elliott, who spent time with the club’s emerging talent group. Elliott worked closely with the Hunters’ young squad, sharing his extensive experience around leadership, behavioral standards and what it takes to succeed in elite rugby league environments.
PNG Hunters Head Coach and management described the sessions as a valuable learning opportunity, reinforcing expectations around professionalism and responsibility as players continue their development within the Hunters pathway.
Following the completion of Block 1, the club confirmed that Jarran Pitten and Limbi Henry would not be retained for Block 2 of the pre-season for disciplinary issues and not meeting the Hunters professional standards.
Jordan Pat and Khaiya Waembi would also not be retained for alcohol-related disciplinary issues and breaches of the Hunters code of conduct.
The club reiterated its strong stance on alcohol-related behavior, noting the importance of upholding the values and standards of the PNG Hunters brand.
This stance is particularly significant given SP Brewery’s long-standing support as a naming rights partner of the club, and the Hunters’ responsibility to represent their partners, fans and the nation with integrity.
Additionally, the following players will also not be returning for Block 2 of pre-season training, Robert Gigami, Doa Tapako, Joseph Kora, Gregan Foremat.
The PNG Hunters management thanked all departing players for their contributions and wish them the best in their future endeavors. With Block 2 of the pre-season set to start in early January, the Hunters remain focused on continually raising their standards, developing leadership and preparing a disciplined, competitive squad ahead of the upcoming season.
