China remains PNG’s biggest partner

PNG will continue its diplomatic relationship with China as its biggest economic and trade partner, Foreign Affairs Minister  Justin Tkatchenko says.

Mr Tkatchenko in a meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Yang Xiaoguang, emphasized PNG’s commitment to continue to work together to grow relations and opportunities that would benefit both the people, the produce and the business sector.

“It was a pleasure today to have Ambassador Yang pay my office a courtesy visit and for a brief meeting ahead of another busy year on the diplomatic front for Papua New Guinea and China

“Our conversation also included clarity on the PNG-Australia Pukpuk Treaty and Papua New Guinea’s support for the ‘One China Policy’, for which our stand has not changed since day one.

“Our position and support for China’s sovereignty and policy is clearly set out in PNG’s recently endorsed and passed ‘Foreign Policy White Paper.

“This includes our position on Taiwan. This document clearly indicates that without fear or favor from the highest level of decision-making of this country, PNG’s position in relation to China,” Minister Tkatchenko said

He added that 2026 also marked 50 years of PNG-China diplomatic relations, and both governments looked forward to celebrating this milestone later this year.

“We look forward to China’s hosting of APEC 2026 and confirm the attendance of Prime Minister James Marape at this important world leader, meet,” Mr Tkatchenko said.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Elias Wohengu was also present for the meeting, which was held at the Minister’s office on January 9.
