Prime Minister James Marape has called on all Papua New Guineans to take collective responsibility for maintaining law and order, saying peace and social harmony are critical to the country’s development and international image.

In concluding remarks during a press address, the Prime Minister reminded citizens that Papua New Guinea is increasingly visible on the global stage due to its strategic geography and growing international engagement.

“The world certainly knows we exist. We are in an important geography,” he said, urging citizens not to send negative signals about the country through violence or disorder.

Mr Marape stressed that law and order is not the sole responsibility of the government or police, but a shared duty of all citizens in streets, suburbs, villages, highways, and urban centers where people from different provinces live side by side.

He made special mention of Highlands communities living in urban areas such as Port Moresby, Lae, Mount Hagen and Kokopo, calling for mutual respect and peaceful co-existence.

Addressing the nation’s youth, the Prime Minister said the government is doing its best to drive progress but needs the support of young people to achieve more.

“We are doing our absolute best to make sure our country is progressing, and you can help us do even better,” he said.

Mr Marape pointed to Fiji as an example of how peace and stability can drive economic success, noting that despite lacking major natural resources such as oil, gas or mining, Fiji has built a strong economy through tourism and hospitality.

“Fiji survives on hospitality. Last year alone, over one million tourists visited Fiji. Peace transcends throughout the nation, and it attracts visitors from abroad,” he said.

He added that a peaceful environment makes it easier for the government to attract investors, employers and tourists, creating jobs and economic opportunities for Papua New Guineans.

The Prime Minister also revealed that the government, together with Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, will announce new policy innovations in February aimed at improving outcomes in key areas such as

small and medium enterprises (SMEs), housing, education and employment.

“These initiatives depend on you out there,” he said, emphasizing that national development requires partnership between government and citizens.

Mr Marape concluded with a strong appeal for respect, particularly towards women and girls, and urged communities to take ownership of law and order in their respective areas.

As the country moves from its 50th year of Independence towards its 51st anniversary on September 16 this year, the Prime Minister said the responsibility lies with all Papua New Guineans to build a better future for the next generation.

“Together, we can make our country a better place. Let us protect our country by living lawfully wherever we are,” he said.

He assured the public that the government remains at work and encouraged citizens to watch for upcoming policy announcements aimed at improving the lives of Papua New Guineans as the year progresses.
