Minister for Defence and Member for Nipa Kutubu, Hon. Dr. Billy Joseph, has confirmed that the Supreme Court has granted leave in his application seeking a review of a National Court decision relating to the Nipa Kutubu election petition.

Dr. Joseph said the application was heard before Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika, who granted leave to review the decision of National Court Trial Judge Justice Yagi on an objection to competency in Election Petition EP83/2022.

As a result, proceedings in the related National Court trial EP82/2022 have been stayed pending determination by the Supreme Court.

Dr. Joseph said while the legal process continues, his focus remains on leadership and service to the people of Nipa Kutubu.

“Our district needs leadership and service, not a protracted legal battle. Despite these challenges, I have continued to work to the best of my ability for our people and our country, and I remain committed to working even harder every day,” he said.

He urged citizens to respect the rule of law, remain peaceful, and allow the courts to determine the matter, adding that Papua New Guinea must move forward in unity as the country heads towards 2027.

Dr. Joseph also acknowledged and thanked his legal counsel, Mr Paul Mawa, for his diligence in the case.
