The NCD Provincial Health Authority (PHA) management and public health team have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Port Moresby, following the commemoration of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day on 30 January.

The event highlighted the urgent need for stronger action against preventable diseases affecting vulnerable communities in Papua New Guinea, including leprosy, yaws, lymphatic filariasis, scabies, and other skin conditions.

Speakers emphasized that NTDs are closely linked to poverty, water, sanitation, hygiene, and primary health care, requiring an integrated response across sectors.

NCDPHA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Robin Oge stated that Neglected Tropical Diseases continue to affect some of our most vulnerable communities.

” Addressing them requires not only medical treatment but also collaboration across government, partners, churches, and communities.

“Together, we can reduce stigma, strengthen outreach, and ensure early treatment is accessible.

“With the dedication of our frontline health workers and sustained investment, Papua New Guinea can eliminate NTDs and ensure no one is left behind,” Dr Oge said.

The NCDPHA public health team has been actively coordinating awareness campaigns, strengthening outreach programs, and mobilizing frontline health workers to improve early detection and treatment.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to integrate NTD response into primary health care and community-based initiatives.

As part of stakeholder engagement, NCDPHA acknowledges the support of partners and community leaders who continue to champion public health initiatives.

The authority also recognizes the importance of building trust and reducing stigma, ensuring that affected individuals receive care with dignity and respect.
