The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) has organized a night market running for three nights from Friday to Sunday as part of activities to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The market will be located at the car park of Sir Hubert Murray Stadium from March 6-8.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop told a media briefing that City Hall had organized activities and programs for the economic empowerment of women.
“We know that women constitute the largest percentage of trades in our markets, and we want to provide innovative avenues for them to sell their products and for the public to get involved in celebrating International Women’s Day,” Mr Parkop said.
He added that the city would soon launch a women’s economic empowerment strategy to support entrepreneurs, including traders in the market and small business owners.
Mr Parkop called on city residents to turn up in numbers and buy products on offer, to access the information to be provided by development partners and not to miss the family-friendly environment that will include entertainment and relaxation activities.
“I encourage our people to come and spend the evening with their families at the stadium car park and buy products on offer,” he said.
“I also want to encourage women business owners to take advantage of this opportunity because we are providing the space for free.”
Other planned activities to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day include a walk from Ela Beach to Sir Hubert Murray Stadium that will be held on Sunday, March 8th, starting at 5:30 am.
Governor Parkop said the walk would symbolize unity, strength, and collective commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
“The walk is a deliberate effort to raise awareness about gender equality and human rights of women and girls, and to provide an opportunity for communities to participate and access information,” he said.
