COMMUNITIES in Milne Bay Province are celebrating improved safety and connectivity following the opening of the Ahioma bailey bridge on East Cape Road, just seven kilometres from Alotau.
The bridge is a joint investment by the Department of Works and Highways, and the Australian Government under the PNG-Australia Partnership, reinforcing long-standing cooperation to deliver essential transport infrastructure.

Replacing an unsafe river crossing, the Ahioma bailey bridge restores reliable access along East Cape Road, a vital link connecting surrounding communities to the provincial capital and improving access to education, markets, healthcare and government services. The project was completed within three months.
Minister Counsellor for Economics and Infrastructure at the Australian High Commission to PNG, Cate Rogers, said Australia was proud to support infrastructure that delivers tangible benefits.
“Australia is proud that our longstanding partnership with the Department of Works and Highways can deliver practical infrastructure that makes a real difference in people’s daily lives,” Dr Rogers said.
“The Ahioma bailey bridge restores safe and reliable access along East Cape Road, strengthening connectivity, supporting inclusive economic growth and ensuring no one is left behind.”
DoWH Secretary Gibson Holemba said the bridge was a critical investment for Milne Bay.
“This project restores a vital link on East Cape Road, ensuring safer and more reliable access to Alotau and essential services,” Mr Holemba said.
“Working in partnership with the Australian Government, we remain committed to strengthening climate-resilient and inclusive transport infrastructure across Papua New Guinea.”
Australia’s current investments in Milne Bay Province include nine proforma maintenance contracts valued at PGK9 million, as well as a further PGK38 million for long-term maintenance along 127 kilometres of national road on the Magi Highway.
The Australian Government says it will continue working closely with DoWH to deliver high-quality, sustainable infrastructure on Papua New Guinea’s priority roads, supporting communities, strengthening connectivity and driving inclusive economic growth.
