THE Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) and Sports, Hon. Kinoka Feo, today joined PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson and project partners at the Airways Hotel in Port Moresby to officially turn the first sod, marking the commencement of construction of the PNG Chiefs Player Village.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Feo said the development represents an important milestone in preparations for Papua New Guinea’s historic entry into the National Rugby League (NRL).

“Today I was proud to join PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson and our project partners to officially launch the construction of the PNG Chiefs Player Village,” Hon. Feo said.

“The development of this Player Village will create a dedicated home for our players, staff and their families, ensuring they are supported both on and off the field as they represent not only Papua New Guinea, but the wider South Pacific.”

The Player Village will include modern family accommodation, shared community spaces and essential support facilities designed specifically to meet the needs of a professional rugby league club.

Hon. Feo emphasised that creating the right living environment for players and their families is a critical step toward building a successful team.

“Providing a supportive and professional environment will help ensure the PNG Chiefs become a club that athletes from across the region and the world will be proud to join,” he said.

The project also forms part of broader preparations to ensure Port Moresby is ready to host the PNG Chiefs and the international attention that will accompany Papua New Guinea’s entry into the NRL in 2028.

Hon. Feo acknowledged the work already underway across the capital to prepare for this historic milestone.

“Important work is already being undertaken across the city by Hon. Powes Parkop, Governor for the National Capital District, and Hon. Justin Tkatchenko, Minister for Foreign Affairs, alongside many other partners who are helping prepare our capital for this historic opportunity,” he said.

He noted that the groundbreaking marks only the beginning of significant developments ahead.

“In the months ahead we will see further investment in facilities, infrastructure and programs that will support the

PNG Chiefs and ensure Papua New Guinea is ready to successfully enter the National Rugby League in 2028,” Hon. Feo said.

Hon. Feo also acknowledged the continued support of key partners in bringing the project to fruition.

“I also want to acknowledge the ongoing partnership and support of the National Rugby League, including Chairman Peter V’landys and CEO Andrew Abdo, as well as the support of the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Together we are working to deliver the PNG Chiefs and strengthen rugby league across Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.”

Hon. Feo concluded by highlighting the national significance of rugby league in Papua New Guinea.

“Rugby league is the heartbeat of our nation, and the PNG Chiefs will become a powerful symbol of pride, opportunity and unity for Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.”
