IBS University hosted the second National Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for business transformation and economic growth at its Port Moresby campus.

The two-day conference features panel discussions, technical sessions and research paper presentations delivered by distinguished experts, academics and industry leaders.

Discussions focus on the practical applications of AI in both the public and private sectors, while also addressing policy frameworks and digital transformation. Key areas explored include the use of AI in the medical sector, education and cybersecurity.

Head of the IBS University Centre for Research, Dr Sasikumar, emphasised that businesses can become more competitive, efficient and innovative through the strategic use of artificial intelligence. However, he noted that the successful adoption of AI requires collaboration between academia, industry and government.

“In this aspect, universities play a crucial role in building knowledge, conducting research and preparing the workforce with the digital skills needed for the future economy,” Dr Sasikumar said.

Acting Vice-Chancellor of IBS University, Dr Glory Sujitha Antony, said artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming business models across the world and universities have an important role in driving this change.

“Universities are not only places for learning, but also centres for developing ideas. They are where research and innovation take place to help shape the leaders of tomorrow,” Dr Antony said.

Director of Institutional Infrastructure Administration at IBS University, Mr Sagara, said the theme of the conference, Artificial Intelligence for Business Transformation and Economic Growth, is both timely and significant.

“Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the way businesses operate and economies grow. At IBS University, we strongly believe universities have a vital role in advancing research and preparing future professionals to effectively harness these emerging technologies,” he said.

Through this initiative, IBS University aims to contribute to national capacity building, digital literacy and innovation-driven governance, while encouraging knowledge sharing among academia, industry, policymakers and researchers.

The event has attracted participants from across the country and provides a valuable opportunity for networking, collaboration and the exchange of innovative ideas in AI that can support Papua New Guinea’s digital and economic future.
