TotalEnergies PNG, operator of the Papua LNG Project, has provided tertiary scholarships for 52 students from Gulf and Central and Gulf this year.

The scholarships assistance program is valued at K130,400 and is expected to continue in the future.

The 52 students are attending the PNG University of Technology (Unitech) in Lae, and Caritas Technical Secondary School and Don Bosco Technical School in Port Moresby.

TotalEnergies’ Director of Health Sustainability and Safer Environment Claire Viaud highlighted the importance of the scholarships program.

“This program is important as it strengthens and extends our existing partnerships and increase the number of students to sponsor for this year whilst promoting education, skills development and youth empowerment in PNG,” Mrs Viaud said.

“I believe that this is the beginning and the key partnership to empower young people and create more employment opportunities. Hence, we really appreciate this alignment with Papua LNG’s vision for capacity building and national content development.”

Scholarships have been awarded to 15 female students from Caritas Technical Secondary School, which covers tuition, uniforms and boarding (Years 11/12 and Diploma in Business), 33 students in Years 11, Year 12, and ITC 2 from Don Bosco Technical School, and four final year engineering students (two females and two males) from Unitech.

Unitech Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ora Renagi, said: “Unitech is very proud to partner with TotalEnergies and we embrace the partnership.  We have a vision of providing world class education, to positively impact the lives of our people.  Standards of higher education should translate into higher standards in people’s lives.”

Esther Mwayemwana from Caritas said: “I think women empowerment is very important because women need to come out strongly and have a voice in the development of this country and that is through education. Hence, we appreciate Total Energies for this opportunity and being part of this partnership, this is one way to motivate the girls to do well in their studies.”

Fr. Ambrose Pereira of Don Bosco Technical School said: “Our students do not lack IQ what they lack is discipline, and I am sure Total energy is looking for people who are disciplined and who will complete the task that is offered.”

National Petroleum Agency executive, Simon Sanangke, said: “I want to commend TotalEnergies for the work you are doing to develop the younger generation of this country. I am looking forward to standing by you and support this program into the future.”
