Hon. Theo Pelgen, Member for Nawaeb District, has continued his strong commitment to empowering women through Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) initiatives with the distribution of poultry starter kits to mothers in Kamkumung, Ahi Urban Wards 15 and 16, Ahi Urban LLG.

Under this latest support program, selected Mama Groups received 15-day-old chicken boxes along with 89 bags of stock feed, enabling them to venture into small-scale poultry farming as a sustainable income-generating activity.

The initiative is designed to help mothers raise chickens for sale, improving household incomes while contributing to food security within the ward community.

Hon. Pelgen emphasized that economic empowerment at the grassroots level remains a priority of his leadership, particularly for women who play a critical role in family welfare and community development.

“This support is about giving our mothers practical opportunities to earn income, become self-reliant, and actively participate in the local economy,” Hon. Pelgen said.

He further highlighted that poultry projects are well-suited for urban and peri-urban communities like Kamkumung, as they require manageable space and offer quick financial returns when properly managed.

CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR WOMEN’S MSME DEVELOPMENT

This poultry support builds on previous assistance delivered on 1st December 2025, where Hon. Pelgen provided sewing machines and laplap materials to mothers in the same wards.

That initiative focused on tailoring and home-based enterprises, while the current poultry project expands opportunities into agribusiness—ensuring diversified income streams for women across Ahi Urban LLG.

The combined support reflects a broader strategy by the Nawaeb District Development Authority to promote inclusive economic growth through Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

A DISTRICT-WIDE APPROACH

Hon. Pelgen noted that similar SME empowerment programs have been rolled out across Labuta Rural LLG, Erap/Wain LLG, and Ahi Urban LLG, ensuring equitable participation of women throughout the district.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continue delivering practical support programs that build skills, create jobs, and improve livelihoods.

“When we support our mothers, we support entire families, communities, and the future of Nawaeb District,” he said.
