THE Governor of New Ireland Province, Byron Chan, has expressed sincere gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso and the National Gaming Control Board (NGCB) for the timely release of disaster relief funding last Friday to provinces affected by the devastating Category 5 Cyclone Maila.

Governor Chan acknowledged the leadership of James Marape and the swift coordination efforts led by the Acting Prime Minister in delivering a unified national response to the disaster.

“The prompt action taken by the National Government demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting communities during times of crisis. We are deeply appreciative of this intervention, which comes at a critical time for our people,” Governor Chan said.

He also commended Bougainville Affairs Minister Manasseh Makiba and the NGCB for their proactive role in releasing K4.5 million in funding support to the eight affected provinces, namely the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Milne Bay, East New Britain, Manus, Morobe, Northern, West New Britain and  New Ireland.

“This support will significantly strengthen our ongoing relief operations and assist in addressing the immediate needs of our affected communities. It is a clear example of effective collaboration between national institutions in responding to emergencies,” he added.

New Ireland Province sustained considerable damage as a result of Cyclone Maila, with several communities impacted by strong winds and heavy rainfall. Provincial authorities are currently working to ensure that relief supplies and assistance reach those most in need.

Governor Chan reaffirmed New Ireland’s commitment to working alongside the National Government, development partners, and fellow provinces to ensure a coordinated recovery effort.

“We stand in solidarity with all affected provinces and remain committed to rebuilding stronger and more resilient communities,” he said.
