WORK is underway at the Aita wet crossing in Bougainville to restore access for communities after flooding linked to Cyclone Maila, with support from the Australian Government.

Heavy rain disrupted access to markets, schools and health services for nearby communities. The current work aims to restore access quickly and strengthen the crossing to better withstand future climate and disaster impacts.

High water has fallen to closer to normal levels, allowing four-wheel drive access. A temporary pedestrian crossing has been secured 200 metres downstream enabling continued safe passage for the community.

Crews are working to redirect the river away from the damaged crossing and reduce pressure on the site. On the ground, teams are restoring a safer flow path for the river and rebuilding the crossing. Two excavators are in use, including an additional machine brought in to speed up the works.

The works are also strengthening the surrounding riverbank to reduce the risk of future damage and improve the site’s resilience during wet weather.

Through the Transport Sector Support Program Phase 3, and in partnership with the Department of Works and Highways and the Bougainville Department of Infrastructure and Utilities, a climate change resilience and vulnerability assessment will be carried out in Bougainville.

This will strengthen transport infrastructure against future climate and disaster impacts.

Contractors are working closely with local teams to respond quickly to changing conditions. Once complete, the crossing will support more consistent travel for local residents, transport operators and service providers.

Australia is supporting the Government of Papua New Guinea and the Autonomous Bougainville Government to improve and maintain transport links that connect communities to essential services and economic opportunities.
