BANK South Pacific (BSP) has expanded its card upgrade services with the opening of dedicated Card Centres in Lae and Mt Hagen, supporting customers to transition from Kundu Magnetic Stripe Cards to the safer and more secure Kundu Chip Cards ahead of the 31 August 2026 deactivation deadline.
The soft opening of the additional centres come as BSP continues to experience strong demand from customers seeking to replace their cards before the final migration deadline.
As an additional fraud preventative measure, BSP will further reduce daily ATM and EFTPoS transaction limits on the Kundu Magnetic Stripe Cards from K500 to K250, effective 5 August 2026, before all remaining magnetic stripe cards are deactivated on 31 August 2026.
BSP Group General Manager Retail, Ronesh Dayal, said the opening of the new centres reflects BSP’s commitment to making the transition as smooth and convenient as possible for customers. It is also part of the Bank’s ongoing efforts to strengthen customer security and reduce fraud risks
associated with magnetic stripe card technology.
“We understand that some customers have experienced longer waiting times at our branches while upgrading their cards, and we sincerely thank them for their patience and understanding.”
Mr Dayal said the move to Kundu Chip Cards is primarily about protecting customers and their funds from increasingly sophisticated fraud threats.
“Card cloning and fraud are global challenges affecting financial institutions worldwide. Magnetic stripe technology is more vulnerable to fraud, while chip-enabled cards offer enhanced security features that significantly reduce the risk of unauthorised transactions.
While upgrading a card may require a small investment of time today, the long-term benefit is greater protection and peace of mind knowing your funds are safer,” he added.
The migration programme forms part of BSP’s continued investment in modern banking technology and aligns with international security standards. Customers are encouraged to upgrade their cards as soon as possible to avoid disruption to their banking services after 31 August 2026.
Customers outside Port Moresby, Lae and Mt Hagen can continue to visit their nearest BSP branch for assistance with card upgrades and replacements. All branches across PNG remain open for half a day on Saturdays, till 29 August,2026 to support card transition customers on weekends.
