THE Central Provincial Government has invested a total of K6 million for students attending various secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the country
Governor Robert Agarobe revealed this recently as part of his government’s assistance to parents in this hard economic time especially the onslaught of Covid-19.
Each Central student attending tertiary institutions in the country will receive K2,000 tuition fees while the Grade 11 and 12 students will have their parental component paid by the Central provincial government (CPG).
The assistance scheme started four years ago in 2018, were CPG paid a sum of K4 Million to assist students. In 2020 the funding increased to K4.5m and now it is at K6m to assist a total of 883 students in 37 various institutions.
Agarobe said it has been a tough year for the CPG due to Covid-19 and also the continuous court battle between CPG and National Capital District about the Goods and Service Tax.
“We are committing on our commitments that we make to our people. We are happy to say that we are able to meet all our commitments in terms of school fee subsidy to our students. We would like to take this responsibility off them (parents) while they can concentrate on building the provincial economy and save up money for their benefits.
“With education and health we see the importance in investing in our future generation not only in school fee subsides but also including the quality of our schools,” said Agarobe.
He said even though as a province CPG has been talking a lot about agriculture, tourism and sports to drive the economy. There are also very important sectors apart from that but without money they cannot do much so they are prioritizing on economic development.
Agarobe said there are plans already in place and work is ready to go in renovating and improving all central provincial school facilities.
Samuel Benson a central student from Abau attending Pacific Adventist University representing all the recipients of the subsidy is very pleased with the CPG.
“We would like thank CPG. They stepped in at the right time to help us pay our school fees. We are looking forward and whatever needs to be done in Central province, we the students are there to help our CPG to give back to the province,” said Samuel.
