INTERNAL Security Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jnr has urged 118 MPs to work with Provincial Police Commanders (PPC) to address law and order throughout the country
“I encourage MP to check their PPCs to make sure that all your district plans are in line with the Police Commissioner’s policing plan. And that plan is for the MPs to get involved to provide holistic approach in addressing law and order. Your policing plan must be captured and signed off in order for us to have the visibility and support you in 2023 and beyond. So, I encourage you to talk with your PPC where you can sign off in the Commissioner’s plan,” Tsiamalili Jnr said.
Mr Tsiamalili jnr said that, law and order has become a formal discussion.
“Law and order need to be addressed by everyone. Law and order provide the echo system where the country can develop. And our discussion to increase manpower is at the forefront of our plans. PNG police is about 5000 manpower,” he said.
“Global expectation for PNG is one policeman to manage 450 people (1:450). But for PNG we have one police to look 1100 people (1:1110). Way beyond our capacity. I must thank the PM and the DPM who are going ahead in our social sector for putting big support in putting resource in our 2023 budget. Who we see that it was an impediment to address it in our law and order issues. Yes, increasing policemen is in our plan where hopefully next week I will present a work paper on internal security. We will highlight the need and steps we are taking in increasing our capacity. And whist we talk about recruiting to increase our capacity, same time we must respect the exit of our policemen and women.”
Tsiamalili Jnr was responding to Kainantu MP Johnson Tuke. Tuke was expressing his concerns over the spiraling lawlessness throughout the country.
