In a world where many people give up when the odds are against them, Thomson Rako chose the harder path of perseverance.
Growing up in a humble home in Yakoa (Watuma) in the Kagua Erave District of Southern Highlands Province, his academic dreams were nearly dashed when tribal conflicts and violence engulfed his village between 2019 and 2021.
The tribal conflicts caused much suffering and hardships for the Rako family, who were able to provide the much-needed funds for Thomson to pursue tertiary education. Yet, amid the chaos, he held firmly to his dream of getting an education.
“It was painful knowing my parents were also struggling back home but I never allowed that pain to turn into defeat for me,” Thomson recalls.
Without financial support from his parents, Thomson somehow enrolled at the University of Goroka (UOG) in 2019.However, finding the money to pay for his tuition fees, rent, books and food became an almost daily struggle.
Through sheer determination and resilience, Thomson worked hard to support himself during his four years at UOG. Against all odds, he successfully completed his studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree on the 11th of April, 2023.

“Despite facing financial struggles and lacking support from my parents, I persevered and managed to complete my first year at the University of Goroka. Throughout my schooling days, I had to pay for tuition fees, rent, and other resources without any assistance from my parents.
“The struggle I faced during my studies was painful, especially knowing that my parents were also facing challenges at home. But I am grateful that I did not give up and was able to complete my studies at the University of Goroka, earning a bachelor’s degree in education.
“This experience has taught me the value of determination, resilience, and hard work. I have also learned the importance of being independent and self-reliant. I am grateful for the support and guidance from my professors and classmates who have helped me along the way. I am also thankful for the opportunities that the university has provided me despite my challenging circumstances.
“My struggle may have been tough, but it has paid off in the end. I am excited for the future, and I am confident that my education will open up many doors and opportunities for me. I hope to use my knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in my community, especially for those who are facing similar challenges.
“My journey may have been difficult, but I am proud of how far I have come, and I am ready to face whatever challenges that come my way. Thank you, God almighty, for giving me another day to move on to life.
“Life out there is very challenging, so be committed and make use of opportunities for those students who are getting benefits and support from other people.
“This journey taught me the true value of independence, hard work, and never giving up. I am proud of how far I’ve come.”
Thomson credits his professors, classmates, and the opportunities offered by the university for helping him stay the course. Now, he looks forward to using his education to positively impact his community, particularly youths going through similar hardships.
To fellow students, Thomson has a powerful message: “Life is hard, but if you’re being supported, make the most of it. Be committed. Use your opportunities wisely. Don’t take them for granted.”
He ends with a heartfelt gratitude: “Thank you, God almighty, for giving me another day to move forward in life.”
Thomson’s story is proof that dreams do come true if you have hope and determination to achieve your ambition against all odds.
