Caretaker of homeless children calls for support

By HERON KANEMA

ABC Abandon Child Nature Association has appealed to government and any organizations for their support to help take care of the 22 homeless children who are currently being housed at a residential area at Morata 2 in the National Capital District.

The founder of the association Christy Yanis told PNG Bulletin recently that she is now facing difficulties when it comes to provision of basic needs of the children like food, water, clothes, education and proper shelter to house them.

She said this is due to the increase number of children over the years.

“As the number of children increases, their need for basic necessities also increases and this has caused problem on how they could be fully taken care of,” she added.

She said it has been over five years since she started getting children from the streets in Port Moresby to take care of them by providing basic necessities, and that has been done without any help from the government or other organizations.

“I started off with four children in 2015 and since then no one supported me, but I managed to take care of them and now I have many to look after.

“Two of those four children I took them earlier have completed their grades 12 and 10 studies last year but due to school fee problems, they both had to stay home,” she said.

Mrs Yanis has no formal employment but with little she earns from sewing and through the support from her husband, she managed to take care of the children.

She said her purpose for getting children are to provide catering like; clothing, accommodation, hygiene and balance diet and good health for children, and proving education (Basic Child Education) and also sponsor them in future studies so that they would achieve their dreams.

Although Mrs Yanis is not a teacher and besides she doesn’t have proper materials and classroom, she managed to teach the children the basics with little she knows.

She said as a mother, she really feels for the children and wanted to take care of them and send them to school so that they could live better life in the future.

Mrs Yanis however said that to fully give the children better life, she needs support from the government and other organizations, in whatever ways they could to help the children achieve their dreams.

“I need government and other organizations to support me because these children are important as they are the future of this nation, they have to live as normal children and go to school and live their own life in the future,” she reiterated.

Mrs Yanis said will write to organizations for support and also welcome any organization that may be willing to support or work in collaboration to take care of the children.
