ENFORCING the inter group fighting Act in Port Moresby to deal with surge of ethnic clashes is impossible, Deputy Police Commissioner Donald Yamasombi says. The act also known as the tribal Fighting Act aims at holding leaders’ ethnic groups responsible for ethnic clashes.“There is no evidence identifying tribal groups in Port Moresby. After all specific groups must be identified and their leaders must be held to account as well. So, who are these tribal groups in order for us to invoke this Act?” Yamasombi said. Meanwhile, police media has reported that the police hierarchy has taken measures to combat violence in NCD. Meanwhile, NCD Central Commander Assistant Commissioner Anthony Wagambie Junior said the initiative taken by the police hierarchy will ease the burden on the command, and allow them to investigate and expedite the back log of murder cases linked to a series of ethnic clashes in the city recently. Mr Wagambie said the population in the city is literally exploding giving rise to constant ethnic clashes, placing considerable strain on the limited police resources in the city. He said the command is waiting to be equipped with riot gear such as gas guns and ammo, rubber bullets, helmets, vests and hand cuffs, which are essential items when dealing with riots and mass arrests. He said this vital non-lethal weaponry were not issue to the command in a long while. Mr Wagambie said the command is ready to support the initiative taken by the Police Commissioner.
