A FORMER ward councilor has called on the MP for Kairuku to create initiatives for youths, rather recommending them (youths) to set up sporting groups to seek funding.
Former Mekeo Kuni LLG president Bona Ine’e said the MP, Hon Peter Isoaimo should strategise better initiatives for youths to find better options to sustain their living and abstain from illegal activities.
He said setting up sporting associations and organisations to seek funding is just a mere cheap deal which the MP should reconsider.
Ine’e made this statement following the abrupt rise in law-and-order issues in the electorate.
Following a recent council of chiefs meeting at Veifa village, West Mekeo, last month, the office of the Governor of Central and the local MP have vowed to work with the council of chiefs to address the burning law and order issue in the area.
The chiefs from East, West and North Mekeo have suggested for a youth development programme to be initiated to capture youths in the programme.
Ine’e supported the call and added that the MP should consider the youth development concept as a pathway to bargain better options for youths in the programme.
He said that forming sports organisation or groups to seek funding a prerequisite by the MP is just a ‘’one of thing’’ depending on the duration of the sporting tournament.
‘’After tournaments, youths return to their daily core of doing illegal activities. It will become a cycle and there will be no resolutions on the law-and-order issue,’’ Ine’e said.
He said that the MP and his District Development Authority (DDA) should start thinking seriously now and work in partnership with the National Youth Development Authority (NYDA) to create better pathways for youths.
He said the Hiri Koiari DDA under the leadership of MP Keith Iduhu have taken the right course to partner with the NYDA to unleash suitable programs that youths can participate in and better their livelihood.
