In a move to bolster education infrastructure in the Southern Highlands Province, the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Southern Highlands Students Union are moving forward with the last phase of our Book Drive and Awareness Campaign program in the Southern Highlands Province by addressing the critical need for classrooms.

Themed “Building Futures Through Education” this endeavor is committed to delivering essential building materials to build one classroom each in five Junior High Schools in the five districts of the province. These recently promoted Junior High schools, identified by the union, grapple with overcrowded classrooms, some accommodating up to 60 to 70 students in a single space. Furthermore, some institutions resort to borrowing classrooms from nearby primary schools to meet the rising demand.

The selected Junior High Schools include Det High School in Nipa Kutubu District, Kip High School in Mendi Munihu District, Papera High School in the Imbongu District, Apenda High School in the Ialibu Pangia District, and Aiya Robesi High School in Kagua Erave District.

The provided building materials encompass roofing iron sheets, ridge caps, nail curtains, and locally milled timbers from Riwi Village. Transportation logistics for over 1600 timbers might encounter slight delays, but the team is committed to ensuring timely delivery. In the arrangement, the selected schools will acquire the remaining materials needed and build the classrooms themselves.

The distribution of building materials kicked off today and is anticipated to conclude by the end of next week. This initiative not only addresses the immediate need for additional classrooms but also underlines the students’ dedication to creating an optimal learning environment for the younger generation in the Southern Highlands Province.

Deep appreciation goes to our sponsors who supported the highly successful Book Drive and Awareness Campaign in the Southern Highlands Province and the purchase of these building materials. Our gratitude also goes to our Patron, Mr. Tonny Kondo for his strong support and leadership in turning this students vision into a reality.

Without the generous support of these individuals and organizations our initiatives would not have been successful. The Contributors to these Initiatives are:
